The Wrapp - Warring states, Pokémon JPEGs, and idle MMOs
What are the Pocket Gamer team playing this weekend?
Happy Friday and welcome back to The Wrapp, our weekly feature where we discuss our upcoming gaming plans. This time, Iwan and Dann are marching into China for some delightfully over-the-top battling, and Jupiter is putting her farming skills to the test. Elsewhere, Shaun is getting ready to throw some cards face down, and I've invested 7 Great British Pounds in a JPEG.

Staff WriterI have been playing Pokémon Go (no surprise), including travelling to find the LEGO Pikachu. I will be doing some of the egg hatching event this weekend, but primarily I will be at a balloon festival. Another game that I have been playing is Farmville 3. I remember playing Farmville on Facebook and have downloaded the game for mobile, which has already taken up a lot of my free time.

Reviews EditorI’ve been dipping my toes back into the world of Midgard with a series of Ragnarok games lately, and this weekend's pick is Ragnarok Twilight. It's a tad different from what I’m used to when it comes to the franchise, as it’s turned the typical MMORPG into a more casual portrait-mode idler. But it’s still pretty refreshing, and it’s all because of the background music. I’m looking forward to diving deeper into this one over the weekend! Ah, the power of nostalgia.

Staff WriterPhew, let me tell you, Dynasty Warriors: Overlord could have been a lot worse, but it could have been a lot better too. I decided to have a crack at it because it combines two of my loves: Chinese history and flashy melee brawling. And I’m glad to say it certainly delivered on the latter, but as a relative newcomer to the franchise I was shocked at how rough around the edges this mobile adaptation was.
Doubtless that’s due to the somewhat spotty translation and rather crummy UI, but it’s a shame because once it gets going it can be a genuinely decent brawler. Still, it’s not the worst thing to have had a go at.
Other than that, it’s business as usual for me, and as of the time of writing I’m about to jump into My Hero Academia: United Survival. I’ve only really seen one of the films, but anything that has a crack at the Survivors-like genre is worth digging into for me!

Freelance WriterHere we find ourselves towards the end of the week, and there are more new releases than we are even aware of, and we don't know where to start. Considering all the attention that Nolan's The Odyssey is getting, I'm expecting to get plenty of pushes for Greek mythology, but it's been surprisingly scarce. I've decided to just let the algorithm tell me what I should play, and I'm going to latch on to the weirdest or most intriguing one.
Thus, I come to the reason why I droned on about The Odyssey: Because my pick is a Greek mythology game among the… non-Greek mythology games. It's called Enyo, and it's about a goddess strategically fighting armies with a hook and shield to get some artifacts. Okay, here's its chance to get me hooked.

Staff WriterDespite the sometimes bad rep it gets, I do like Yu-Gi-Oh! GX. Primarily because, despite its absurdity, a school teaching you to play card games is a great setting for video games. Playing the Tag Force games on GBA, I was once interested in making a HERO deck like Jaden Yuki before abandoning it since it sucked.
However, Yu-Gi-Oh! Master Duel is celebrating 100 million downloads, and in this campaign, it is thrusting the HERO archetype into the limelight. I have always been more of a Duel Links man, but I think I shall swap games this weekend and see if I can put together a decent HERO deck now. Although with all the ridiculous new rules, I don’t think I will pass turn one.

Editor in ChiefI’m actually still in a Cookie Run: Crumble-shaped hole at the moment; however, I’ve downloaded Dynasty Warriors: Overlord and will be following Iwan’s footsteps into the age of the Warring States to see what it’s all about. I’m a big fan of the series (I even count myself among the minority who enjoyed DW9) and so I’m keen to see how they’ve adapted it for smaller screens… not least because one of the goals of the series has always been to fit as many enemies on screen as they can at once.

Deputy EditorI've been known to spend my money on various stupid and pointless things. I distinctly remember an enthusiastic tech phase where I bought any gadget that seemed vaguely useful. Naturally, none of them ever got used. These days, it's games where I make silly purchases, which leads me to what I'll be doing this weekend.
In Pokémon Champions' latest battle pass, you can get a Chandelure icon. In the grand scheme of things, this does absolutely nothing. It just sits on your profile page, letting anyone who looks at it know I like Chandelure. And yet, I've essentially spent £7.99 on a tiny circle with a ghostly light fitting in it that I'll stop noticing after about a week. So, I’ll be grinding through that over the next couple of days. Will it be worth it? Maybe for a few seconds when I finally replace Ampharos.
