The King of Fighters AFK launches early access in Canada and Thailand for Android and iOS
  • The King of Fighters AFK is set to enter early access in Thailand and Canada
  • Fans in those territories can download it now from Google Play or the iOS App Store
  • You'll receive guaranteed recruitment of Mature from the Orochi Clan to join your lineup

King of Fighters fans, rejoice or lament in equal measure. Lament because The King of Fighters Allstar is still dead and buried, but rejoice because the newest mobile entry The King of Fighters AFK is out now in early access for Thailand and Canada!

Yes, after launching pre-registration for Android and iOS just last week, fans who live in Thailand and Canada can now get their mitts on this retro RPG-inspired take on the famous fighting game franchise. And yes, before you ask your progress will be carried over when the full release hits, as NetMarble has confirmed.

You can probably guess by the title alone, but once more for emphasis; King of Fighters AFK sees your favourite characters from the iconic beat-'em-up (it's a valid name for the genre, look it up) series coming back to mobile. Build your deck of distinct characters and create diverse formations for deliciously retro 5v5 action.

KoF AFK will have stiff competition to win back fans. Unlike King of Fighters Allstar, which had the benefit of some crazy crossovers, such as with wrestling promotion the WWE, King of Fighters AFK is in an even more distant genre from the original series.

Some of you, I'm sure, will take heart from seeing Neo-Geo Pocket-inspired sprites of your favourite characters or from (for those downloading it now in early access) the guaranteed acquisition of Mature, one of the top Orochi clan members, to join their lineup.

But at the same time, this may still be a hard sell for fans who already feel a bit burnt. Here's hoping it can prove their fears unfounded and offer KoF fans some laid-back action to enjoy.

If you're looking to see whether your favourite brawler has made its mark on mobile, why not dig into our list of the top 25 best fighting games for iOS and Android to see if it landed or whiffed?
