GDC ’09: EA bringing Wolfenstein RPG to iPhone

Among EA’s long list of iPhone announcements at GDC ’09, Wolfenstein RPG got a proud mention as coming to the iPhone this year.

This unusual genre switch from FPS to turn-based RPG worked surprisingly well on the mobile, as did its younger cousin Doom RPG. The combat mechanics, which are tricky on a keypad for FPS games, take on a turn-based fighting system to free players up to make more strategic and skilful choices.

The news lands just as id Software’s John Carmack has made the source code for his iPhone Wolfenstein work open source, in the hope that the home brew development community will pick it up and run with it – which they undoubtedly will.

These are completely separate games, it should be noted, but together they should conspire to bring Wolfenstein back from the dead and bashing Nazi heads on the iPhone in classic style.

Yes. Spanner's his real name, and he's already heard that joke you just thought of. Although Spanner's not very good, he's quite fast, and that seems to be enough to keep him in a regular supply of free games and away from the depressing world of real work.
