Tips & Tricks

Pop Epoch is not a particularly serious retelling of human history. Although, as many people have pointed out, there are some interesting historical factoids buried in there. But the roster certainly isn't going to be lighting up any historian's world, considering it marries real-world influential figures with those drawn from mythology.

You'll start off encountering Prometheus in the Ice Age, although his main role is to gift your tribe fire, which you'll make use of with a quick minigame. For when heroes actually become important, you'll have to make your way further through to find out, as you'll unlock the Campaign option (auto-battles) through the storyline, leading you into the Stone Age.

This is where heroes really become important as they lead your armies in these battles. If you're familiar at all with the genre, you'll know what to expect: set it to 'auto' (only available after a certain tech level) and 'let it ride' as the kids say, while upgrading your heroes if they fail in battle. Opposing generals will consist of other heroes, which lets you get an early idea of how matchups work.

Of course, heroes in battle are only a small part of their function, as they also work to help you out on the production front. That includes increasing the level of barracks and production, so as you might expect, different heroes will be more or less useful depending on their martial or societal inclination. Each hero also has their own skills, one for battle and one for structures, which means even martial heroes can be useful for production.

Finally, heroes do have stated 'roles'; however, this rarely seems to make a difference. Battles are typically either automatic or, in the case of boss battles, a matter of who has the bigger number. So, aiming to grab heroes that have a higher overall power is usually the easiest path to success.

A Tier

  • Augustus
  • William Shakespeare
  • Tutankhamun
  • Richard I
  • Da Vinci
  • Charles the Great
  • Alexander the Great
  • Achilles
  • Joan of Arc
  • Gilgamesh
  • These are where mainly high-power heroes will be located. Since it's not always feasible to test every single hero in every situation, this is where you'll find the rarer members, although some may drop into lower tiers if their overall abilities simply aren't as good as others of the same tier. This is because you'd expect high performance for the difficulty that they pose in recruitment, or those with small but helpful abilities very useful in specific circumstances (Joan of Arc's High Morale ability increases overall damage dealt in Campaign!).

The UR heroes near universally fall into this category, both because of their power and their overall abilities, with Augustus, for example, boosting your Ally damage by a whopping 12% in certain circumstances - not to mention their skills having a much higher chance of activation. These are the ones you'll want to be aiming for if you manage to get the chance, so don't pass them up!

    B Tier

  • Hector
  • Wallace
  • Mary I
  • Hatshepsut
  • Alfred the Great
  • Galileo Galilei
  • Eleanor of Aquitaine
  • Hammurabi
  • Livia Drusilla
  • Socrates
  • Confucius
  • Saladin
  • Catherine de' Medici
  • Marco Polo
  • Cervantes
  • Dido
  • The solid, comfortable middle-of-the-road heroes. That is to say, those with good power and useful abilities who are great for adding to your buildings and taking into battle alike. I admit - there'll also be some personal bias for characters I personally find interesting since, well, Pop Epoch does at least pretend to have a historical focus!

    C Tier

  • Prometheus
  • Adam
  • Noah
  • Dante
  • Michelangelo
  • Homer
  • Hannibal
  • Chaucer
  • Robin Hood
  • Himiko
  • This tier is for more broadly useful but still limited heroes. Prometheus is your first hero, fitting for the one who gave fire to humanity in mythology, but he mainly functions as a simple martial leader with some limited production benefits. This means he can be useful before you unlock more, but once you do, he becomes a little redundant. The same goes for Adam and Noah, who serve as decent core picks for your heroes but could definitely work better.

    D Tier

An image of the mathematician Archimedes having just jumped out of the bath, crying Eureka with a rubber duck balanced on his head.
  • Archimedes
  • Cu Chullain
  • Isabella I
  • Hypatia
  • This tier is mainly oriented towards heroes who're only really useful in one field. Hence, Archimedes, who, if you're like me, may be one of your earliest unlocked heroes outside those in the story. However, the issue for me is that he lacks the better stone production benefits of Noah, while also not being too great on the battlefield. Again, take this with a grain of salt, as depending on how you build your team, they may prove useful to you!
