Dragon Egg is one of the rarest items in the whole game - if not the rarest. But how can you get your hands on this item? And how to hatch a Dragon Egg in Minecraft? Is it even possible? If you are looking for answers to these questions, you are in the right place. Keep reading to find out everything there is to know!

How to obtain a Dragon Egg in Minecraft

Dragon's Egg in Minecraft
If you're looking to add a Dragon Egg to your Minecraft collection, you'll need to take down the formidable Ender Dragon. After successfully defeating the dragon, an egg will be dropped on the exit portal. In order to successfully retrieve the egg, it is important to utilise a non-piston tool on the egg.

In Survival Mode, in order to obtain the Dragon Egg, one must retrieve it from its dropped location. Alternatively, in Creative mode, it can be easily accessed by selecting it from the inventory.

As any Minecraft enthusiast will tell you, the Dragon Egg is a highly sought-after item that holds immense value in the game. However, it is worth noting that this item has limited practical uses. You may consider utilising it as an ornamental piece or a symbol of your triumph in conquering the Ender Dragon.

How to hatch a Dragon Egg in Minecraft

Even though a simple online search will have you come across many videos that show how to hatch a baby Ender Dragon in Minecraft, the truth is that there's no such thing, at least in the base game. There are mods and plugins that allow you to do that, but that's a different story and we are not going to cover that here.

But what you can do instead is respawn the Ender Dragon by using End Crystals and the egg. Here's how:

End Crystals
Through the Stronghold, go back to the End Dimension. Once you are there, place four End Crystals in the middle tile on each side of the exit portal. Once you put the fourth one, the summoning process will start.

Any player-placed blocks are destroyed when the top of each pillar explodes. The Ender Dragon eventually hatches in the location (0.0, 128, 0.0) where all of the end crystals point to. Then the four crystals that were positioned around the exit portal will detonate.

Keep in mind that the dragon egg vanishes if the player begins to re-summon the dragon without first picking up the dragon egg.

If you are playing the Bedrock version, you can re-spawn the Ender Dragon and claim another egg. As for the Java players, all you can do is simply re-spawn the dragon but you won't get another egg. That's at least for now. Maybe in the future, things will change, and if they do, we will update this post.

How to obtain an End Crystal in Minecraft

Black Dragon flying - Minecraft
An end crystal is found atop each obsidian pillar on the central island of the End, each on top of a piece of bedrock. There are 10 end crystals in total, of which two are protected in "cages" of iron bars. All end crystals respawn one after another as the respawning process of the ender dragon starts.

You can also craft an End Crystal. For that, you are going to need Glass (x7), Eye of Ender (x4), and Ghast Tear (x4) per End Crystal. If you want to craft an Eye of Ender, what you are going to need is Blaze Powder and Ender Pearl and of course, a Crafting Table.

Here are the steps you need to take in order to create an End Crystal. Place the "Eye of Ender" in the centre of the workbench. Put a "Ghast Tear" in the bottom row's middle cell after that. Last but not least, put "Glass" blocks in each of the remaining areas.

That's all you need to do to hatch a dragon's egg. If you're keen on learning more, we have a lot more Minecraft guides prepared for you!

I enjoy playing games ever since I was a kid (which was a long long time ago at this point). Everything started with an Atari 65XE. Then came an Amiga 500+, a Sega Genesis, a 386, a Playstation, a Playstation 2 and so on. Anyway, you get the idea. I consider myself lucky to be able to experience the gaming evolution throughout the years. This is my passion, and what I will continue to do for as long as I can.
