With a good chunk of the world currently in lockdown to combat the spread of COVID-19, we've seen plenty of premium games go free for a limited time. Now, Google has opted to give away two months of Stadia Pro, its premium game streaming subscription service.
"We're facing some of the most challenging times in recent memory. Keeping social distance is vital, but staying home for long periods can be difficult and feel isolating", says Google Stadia Vice President and GM, Phil Harrison, in today's update. "Video games can be a valuable way to socialize with friends and family when you're stuck at home, so we're giving gamers in 14 countries free access to Stadia for two months".
The offer will be available for some today and will continue to roll out over the next 48 hours. An active Stadia Pro subscription gets you access to nine games straight away, including Destiny 2, GRID, and one of my all-time favourites, Thumper.
If that's not enough for you, there's also the option to purchase other games on the Stadia store. These will obviously remain yours to play even if you opt to cancel your Pro subscription.
Once your trial is up, you'll be charged the usual $9.99 a month, but there's always the option to cancel your subscription if it's not for you. Those already subscribed to Stadia Pro won't be charged for the next two months, which is a nice move.
The decision has been made to reduce the default screen resolution from 4k to 1080p for the time being to reduce load on the internet. And anyway, this isn't really as big an issue as you might think, especially as you can change your own data usage options in the Stadia app itself.
