Welcome Kokuri-san, a new mystery visual novel based on the Japanese VTuber Kurune Kokuri, is due out later this year

Developer CyberStep has announced its brand new mobile visual novel set for release on May 24th of this year. Welcome Kokuri-san sees you taking on the mantle of investigating the Seven Wonders of a nondescript Japanese high school, which essentially act as urban legends. The first of these is the spell of Kokuri-san, which is rumoured to summon a fox spirit named Kurune Kokuri.

In case you aren’t quite up to speed with the goings-on of Japanese media, this game is entirely based around one of many Japanese VTubers, Kurune Kokuri - a virtual Youtuber. This is a pretty new and constantly growing corner of the internet, with Kokuri herself being an independent one and unsigned to any label. Given her popularity, it’s easy to see why a development team would team up with her to create this new visual novel experience.

If you’re a fan of Kokuri-san already, then you’ll be pleased to know that her character in-game is voiced entirely by her too! This makes the experience feel quite genuine and somewhat raises it beyond a simple fanmade project.

As for the content of the game itself, if you’ve played other visual novels then you know what you’re in for. It’s a light-hearted mystery romp that was mostly made to honour Kokuri-san, but it is focused on telling a bit of an interesting story beyond that. It’s not just fanservice here, and even those unaware of Kokuri-san’s trailer will be able to take part in Welcome Kokuri-san without being completely lost.

So, if you’re looking for an interesting but not-too-heavy mysterious visual novel to try out, or if you’re just a fan of the VTuber herself, you’ll be able to get your hands on Welcome Kokuri-san when it launches later this year!
