Developer Ankama, who you might know from MMOs Dofus and Wakfu, has announced a new tactical RPG. It's called Waven, and it's planned to launch for iOS, Android, and PC toward the end of the year. However, you won't have to wait that long to give it a try. An early access period will kick off this summer.

Waven aims to blend elements from traditional RPGs and deck builders. Battles are turn-based, meaning your tactical nous is your best asset rather than your reactions. With each turn, you can use spells by playing cards from your deck or summon mythical creatures to fight alongside you.

There are several classes to choose from, each with different subsets. That means there should be something to suit every playstyle. Regardless of which you pick, you can upgrade your deck and the equipment your character dons in each fight. You can also team up with your pals and battle your foes together.

However, it's unlikely you will stick with the same build from start to finish. Waven's world is split into a series of islands, and each is home to monsters with drastically different tactics. So, you might want to tweak your character to better deal with the strategies a particular island deploys.

Outside of the single-player, there are two other modes to enjoy. Haven Island sees you defending your territory from other players in an asynchronous mode where your deck does the battling for you. The other game type is the Kolossium, a PvP mode where you can test your mettle against other players in a bid to become the greatest.

Waven will launch in late 2023 on the App Store, Google Play, and Steam. It's going to be a free-to-play game with in-app purchases. If you want to stay up to date with the latest developments, you can sign up for the newsletter on the official site.
