Don’t know your knights from your pawns? Think backgammon should be served with pineapple?

Good news, then: Art Whirled has been in touch to announce the release of iPhone game Struck, with a physical boardgame version also being released in the shops over the next couple of months.

Struck: Strategy + Luck has been described by the developer as “harder than checkers, but easier than chess and with a learning curve and difficulty somewhere between the two.” It promises to appeal to both casual gamers and boardgame generals alike.

Like many classic boardgames, Struck is a game of strategy and luck for two players. However, unlike traditional boardgames the unique gameplay of Struck allows you to change the layout of the board and colour of the pieces during play.

The ultimate goal is to reach the opponent's end of the board while preventing your opponent from reaching yours. Roll the dice and strategise how best to use your remaining moves. Move a piece, or change the polarity of a piece and/or square on the board in order to outwit your opponent.

With three modes of gameplay including two-player pass-to-play, puzzle and an online mode, let’s hope Struck can successfully bring some originality to a genre on the iPhone that's otherwise dominated by traditional boardgames.

It's currently on the App Store at £1.19 (or $1.99).
