Sonic CD prototype running on the iPhone
And running incredibly fast, too
It was an exciting day when Sega finally got around to putting Sonic The Hedgehog onto the iPhone, though the crew emulation underlying is handheld jaunt didn't do him any favours at all.
But apparently that wasn't because Apple's device was incapable of recreating the classic high speed platformer. Developer of the Retro Engine Development Kit (RDSK), Christian Whitehead, has released a proof of concept video of an iPhone adaptation of the considerably more resorts intensive Sonic CD, which is running at an impressive 60 frames per second.
Whitehead credits his retro development platform for allowing him to put this impressive prototype together in just a month, without using any of the original game's source code.
Of course, this is all still very unofficial, though as chance would have it Sega has been requesting feedback on its iPhone endeavours, so Whitehead has launched a forum topic for gamers to register their approval with Sega.
Check out the video below, then go and make your voice heard for Sonic CD on the iPhone.
