Samurai Shodown 3, the third entry into the classic fighting game series, is now available on mobile courtesy of the ACA NeoGeo Library
SNK and Hamster have teamed up to bring the classic 2D fighter Samurai Shodown 3 to mobile, courtesy of the ACA NeoGeo Library. This constantly expanding library includes re-releases of older games that are further enhanced with some modern-day features alongside full touch control support. This time around, we’ve got the third entry in what is one of the bigger classic fighting game series, Samurai Shodown, which holds a unique place within the fighting game scene.
Samurai Shodown is, while not quite as big as something like Street Fighter or Mortal Kombat, a pretty popular series due to its very unique and punishing gameplay style. Rather than big combos or aerial movement and the like, Samurai Shodown is known for its fundamental-based, low-hit combos, and super high damage style.
In fighting games, there is a concept players call “footsies”, which basically means proper spacing to make sure you don’t get hit by your opponent while you hit them. Back dashing, knowing when to move forward or push backwards, things like this. Samurai Shodown is built around this fundamental concept and encourages you to focus on enhancing this part of your fighting game skill over any other.
If you don’t manage to do this, you’ll get hit by 1-3 hit combos and die before you can blink. Nearly every move does massive damage to your health bar, as the game was built around the idea of emulating old samurai movies and their deadly one-hit kill duels. It’s a super unique style of gameplay for a fighting game that makes Samurai Shodown stand out as its own thing.
So, if all of that sounds awesome to you, you should absolutely give this one a go. With modern quality-of-life buffs like enhanced graphics, touch control support, online multiplayer, and gamepad support, this is the best way to play the game!
