PUBG Mobile World Cup Group Stages close with Alter Ego Ares getting top billing

• The Group Stages have just finished, with the top eight teams on their way to the Grand Finals
• Meanwhile, the remaining teams will battle for a spot via the Survival Stage

With the Esports World Cup now underway in Saudi Arabia, it's no surprise we've had some big news coming out of it. For PUBG Mobile fans, it'll be today's results of the Group Stage at the PMWC (PUBG Mobile World Cup) that saw Alter Ego Ares marked as top performers and eight teams qualify for the Grand Finals (August 1st-3rd).

The top eight teams that'll progress directly to the grand finals are as follows: Alter Ego Areas, 4Thrives Esports, DRX, Weibo Gaming, Alpha Gaming, Team Secret, TT Global and IDA Esports. Alter Ego Ares in particular stood out as a top performer with consistent top rankings, followed by DRX and Weibo Gaming.

But performance in the group stage doesn't always translate to a winning streak in the finals, and right now it's still anybody's victory to take home. And with the remaining 16 teams now headed to the Survival Stage (July 29th-30th), we could see some down-and-outs making a surprise comeback.

Winner, winner, chicken dinner

The grandiose name of the PMWC is no mistake. With a $3 million prize pool on the line, there are high stakes to match the production values of this major esports competition. And for fans of PUBG Mobile, it offers a chance to see the top teams performing at a level otherwise unseen anywhere else.

Of course, as I always wonder whenever the EWC hits headlines, it's whether or not it'll bring in average fans. Saudi Arabia's big push into gaming has made the Esports World Cup a worldwide event, but it's whether or not the PMWC and competitions like it manage to gain the prestige in the wider esports community that'll make it a success.
