One More Hit lets you Moneyball the beautiful sport of baseball

The 2011 film Moneyball sees Brad Pitt playing Billy Beane, a manager who uses a statistical approach to baseball where undervalued players that can be hired on for cheap end up proving to be a successful team thanks to their mathematical performance. And if that sounds interesting, then One More Hit might be the closest thing we have to a game adaptation.

One More Hit is a roguelike baseball sim that, rather than focusing on the moment-to-moment action or drafts and planning, pitches you the idea of slowly building out your team. The challenge is knowing when to take a risk and when to stop, as you pull new cards featuring different players whilst aiming to stay below your salary cap.

Play ball!

I admit, it's a bit complex for me to understand, given I'm not a baseball fan. But the mixture of strategy, randomness and number-crunching for prospective managers in One More Hit promises a pretty compelling spin on the sports sim genre that, even if it isn't visually like what you'd expect, communicates the same sense of fun and tension.

Now, that does come with some caveats, such as more than a few bits of AI art seemingly sprinkled throughout. Which is a shame because I think the idea of a roguelike baseball game that stays true to the rules and mathematics of the game is strong enough to stand on its own.

But if you're willing to give it a chance, then you might just be able to push your luck to winning big in One More Hit, available now on Google Play.
