War? Video games, that's what it's good for

DS + PSP

In the barren, gaming no man's land that is August, the familiar crackle of digitised gunfire can be heard. And as odd as it may seem to say it, it's a reassuring sound.

That's because the release of Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter 2 next week effectively signals the transition between the end of the summer drought and the beginning of the Christmas craziness – a time when we'll suddenly be charged by a vast army of games trying its hardest to outflank our editorial ability.

Fear not, we'll cope.

It's not all down to Tom Clancy, though. True, Madden NFL 08 may not feature GRAW2's artillery, but the level of combat it offers on its own, greener version of the battlefield is no less savage. And in fairness, it's its arrival this week that really marks the start of the big gun releases.

Who said war was good for absolutely nothing?
