Sony might allow you to exchange UMDs for downloads

As delighted as we are that Sony is finally getting behind its PSP brand, the new hardware upgrade is currently looking a little too limited and expensive to really get us on board.

Next to the excessive price tag, the biggest concern PSP gamers have raised over the PSP Go! is what they'll do with their UMD collection should they choose to upgrade.

While it's true to say you'd presumably also own an older PSP, it's even more true to say you won't want to carry both and would probably be thinking about putting your old one on eBay to try and recoup some of the costs of the PSP Go!, so it's undeniably a genuine concern.

Well, Kotaku is quoting SCE's Brian Keltner, who apparently agrees.

"We are looking into programs for owners who have previously purchased UMD titles and want to exchange them for digital versions," he says. "It's something we are still hammering out the details. As soon as we have solid plans in place we will make an announcement."

This multicoloured swap shop is planned to be in place for the PSP Go!'s launch on October 1st, and is described by Sony's John Koller as a "short term good will program that would continue for years afterward."

No details yet on exactly how such a programme would work. Presumably you'd have to give up your UMD to get the download, or possibly reclaim some kind of PlayStation Store credit, and hinges on whether or not your game is available as a download, of course.

Your thoughts on a postcard, please.

Yes. Spanner's his real name, and he's already heard that joke you just thought of. Although Spanner's not very good, he's quite fast, and that seems to be enough to keep him in a regular supply of free games and away from the depressing world of real work.
