PSP continued to hold onto its top-selling console position in Japan last week, according to the latest sales data from Media Create.

The console shifted another 85,421 units, which was only 500 less than the previous week. As the sales of Monster Hunter Portable 2nd G, the game to which we can attribute quite a few of those PSP sales, have hardly slowed up since its release almost a month ago - Capcom recently announced two million copies had been shipped in total - we can probably expect PSP to be in the top slot for a while longer too.

DS was the second biggest-selling console in Japan for the week with just 44,551 units sold, down from 47,158 the previous week.

Nintendo's other console Wii was the biggest selling home console in the charts, shifting 44,241 units.

News earlier this week indicated PSP sales are likely to tip over the nine million mark in Japan very shortly.

Admittedly though, the console still has some way to go to catch up with its rival the Nintendo DS, which has sold over twenty million in Japan since launch.
