True enough, the PSP got a sudden and potent shot in the arm recently when a bunch of hot new titles were announced for 2008’s most ignored console, but anyone looking to really boost their handheld games catalogue should perhaps cast a curious eye over this Java emulator.

PSPKVM allows you to play your vast collection of Java mobile games through emulation, but goes one step further by actually emulating specific handsets. So, if you prefer the look and feel of games on a specific phone, you’ve got the option of tweaking the PSP to suit your preferences.

The keypad is mapped to the PSP’s buttons, natch, though the PSPKVM system also offers an onscreen keypad to make certain functions easier to handle.

And, by allowing multiple instances of midlets to run at once, you can go beyond just gaming and use IM software, the mini-Opera browser and Google maps (for example), should you take to PSP Java as a simple homebrew alternative.

Version 0.5.1’s just been released, so head on over to the official PSPKVM site if this tickles your fancy.

Yes. Spanner's his real name, and he's already heard that joke you just thought of. Although Spanner's not very good, he's quite fast, and that seems to be enough to keep him in a regular supply of free games and away from the depressing world of real work.
