In the Far East, the two major handheld consoles have been in something of a neck-and-neck race - each one suffering wins and losses as the annual sales figures begin to filter through.

This time we’re looking at video game magazine Famitsu’s December game sales figures in Japan, and it’s dominated by pocket gaming.

The PSP landed the number one spot with Square Enix’s Dissidia, which is the kind of win Sony desperately needs right now.

But that doesn’t mean it’s crying time for Nintendo, which makes up for missing the top position by getting Kirby Super Star Ultra, Wagamama Fashion Girl's Mode, Professor Layton and The Last Time Travel and Pokémon Platinum into positions 3, 4, 5 and 6.

Console sales of the actual hardware might be down, but it looks as though that simply means the Japanese gaming populace have kitted themselves out and are ready to start playing.

Yes. Spanner's his real name, and he's already heard that joke you just thought of. Although Spanner's not very good, he's quite fast, and that seems to be enough to keep him in a regular supply of free games and away from the depressing world of real work.
