iPhone Pipe Mania homage MegaVolt arcs onto the App Store
Lightning in a bottle
Pioneered in golden age games like Pipe Mania, the chain game formula is well trodden. The new game MegaVolt from iPhone startup Zoobrix is a reset to the genre.
MegaVolt stars a cartoonish energy charge fighting against evildoers. The only way to defeat them is to get enough charges passing from the left to the right side of the screen before the time runs out. The piping must be turned to create a continuous current.
The story is told through expressive, comic cut-scenes, while the game itself has a big, bright feel to it, which adds to the charm.
Aside from the polished art style, MegaVolt brings different gameplay to the genre, including bombs that blast away piping and bugs that block your movement. Bonus items like time freezers can be collected by pushing a charge where they appear.
There are 36 levels and two unlockable modes. The difficulty level definitely seems geared towards the experienced gamer, so expect the three dozen levels to take a while to pipe through.
MegaVolt is out now for 59p / 99c / €0.79.
