During Riot's bid to more than triple the number of games in their library, they also revealed a digital card game called Legends of Runeterra. Those of you familiar with League will know by that name that it'll be set in the same universe as Riot's MOBA titan. We can expect to see the game for iOS and Android in late 2020.

The gameplay of Legends of Runeterra is split up into rounds with each player being on either offence or defence, depending on whether they have a shield or sword on their side of the field. This means that only one person can attack per turn, but both will be able to play cards. Every time either player puts down a card their own opponent will have an opportunity to respond.

When you throw in the various spell cards available, this can potentially result in a fairly lengthy chain. Thankfully, for those of us who can't comprehend that many moves ahead, there's a feature called the Oracle's Eye which will show you the outcome of any spell chain. For a more in-depth and visual explanation of how the game plays out, check out the video below.

The cards themselves are a mixture of champions from the game, new characters from Runeterra's various regions and spells where the inspiration comes from champions abilities, such as Jinx's chompers or Lux's barrier. Each champion card has the ability to level up when certain criteria are met such as Thresh will gain a level when he's seen three enemies die, sadist that he is.

Each region will bring its own different play style to the proceedings. For instance, Noxus cards will be focuses on aggressive play whilst those from the Freljord will be survival based. You won't be limited to one region though, you'll be able to mix and match the cards to create your ideal deck.

You can pre-register for Legends of Runeterra now on Google Play if you'd like. It will be available on the App Store at some stage too, however, there is no store listing at present. You can also pre-register to play the game on PC and download Legends of Runeterra so it's ready for when your account is activated via the official site.
