Evony beginner's guide: tips, tricks and more

Starting any game can be a burden that will sometimes turn you away. That's why it's important to get off to a good start from the very beginning and to prepare for the unknown mechanics and the challenges that await you. That's why we made this beginner's guide for Evony. It includes nine tips that will help you have the best possible opening and there's also a secret guide within one of the tips!
These mini-games will likely be familiar to you. You know those funny little advertisements showing a puzzle game where your character is trapped and you must pull the right hooks at the right times to help him or her gets to the treasure? Well, that's the game that's in Evony.
This mini-game plays an important role in your growth and they're quite fun. As you can expect, these can get harder as you advance. But, before you even get to this point, you need to select which nation you want to rule. From Europe to Japan to America, there are several nations to choose from, each with its own unique benefits.

Once you have made your decision, it's time to begin your strategic adventures. Evony offers a lot of ways to build and defend your evolving city. In this guide, we'll give you several tips to help you during your reign.
Tip #1 - The Rewards are Puzzling
No, don’t worry, there’s nothing wrong with the rewards you earn in Evony. But, you can net plenty of them by doing the puzzles we talked about earlier (ah, now the joke makes sense) throughout your time playing the game. Although you are relatively limited in terms of the puzzles you can do, they play a big role in the growth of your empire.
You start off trapped and you need to carve a path for the explorer so he can reach the treasure chest. They’ll get trickier as you go but you can take your time and understand the layout. In the end, these games are fun and the resourceful rewards are worth it.
Tip #2 - Time for an Upgrade
The main way to advance your legacy in Evony is simply by upgrading your structures. Initially, you’ll start with a few but there are plenty of empty spots that need filling. If you want to build an epic empire, you definitely need to upgrade. Upgrading in any game seems essential but that’s especially true here.
Once you gather enough resources to make the necessary changes, you’ll be able to earn XP and level up your game. This will then allow you to go and add new structures. New structures mean that you’ll be able to recruit new troops and gather more resources. The upgrading of certain structures is required to upgrade others so keep that in mind as well.
Tip #3 - Claim Those Quests
You will be reminded of this but it’s a good thing to just remember anyway. Make sure that you go and claim your quest rewards in Evony. It’s easy to get lost in everything that’s going on that sometimes we can forget to snag our goodies.
Grabbing these will rack up your XP points. And like we talked about, leveling up via your XP is the ultimate way to grow your city. So just make sure to hit that little “Quests” button on the bottom left corner of your screen to not only view what quests are available but gain the rewards from the ones you completed.
Tip #4 - Build Farms
Getting yourself some farms is great in Evony as this will allow you to make food and how can a city, let alone the entire human race, thrive without food and water, right? The nice thing about building farms is that they’re typically free. Once you have them built, you can begin to collect food regularly and fill the bellies of your citizens.
You can grab food by other means as well but this is the simplest and you can build quite a few farms. Other ways include just playing through the game and earning rewards. Many of the reward packages do include things like food so there are different options. But, getting them from farms is a huge plus.
Tip #5 - Plant Your Flag
In Evony, you can go over to certain areas and take over for a little while. Just make sure you have some troops and a leader ready to go. You’ll see some structures that appear abandoned near yours and other players’ cities. You can choose to occupy the area, which can take around three to five minutes depending on how close it is.
It’ll take several seconds for your crew to arrive, a couple of minutes to search around, and then several more seconds to return home. This is a good way to gather resources. The rewards are random but you can stock up nicely. Just make sure to watch out for any danger along the way such as robbers and even monsters, depending on the path you need to take.
Tip #6 - What a Talented Player
Remember the old Research facility we mentioned earlier? Well, this is where it really shines in Evony. When you click on your profile, you’ll be presented with many different options for your character. One of those things is your “Talents” page. This is where you can apply certain skills to your character which in turn will have an effect on the growth of your empire.
Some of the talents range from marching speed to resource production to improved archer tower attack power, there’s a lot on offer. The catch is that you’ll not only need to research these abilities but you’ll also need to level up as well. There are three Talents every four levels. You can max each of these skills out at four by using Talent Points which you can earn as you play.
Tip #7 - Survey The Area Good
Going back to the mini-game in Evony, we know how important it is in terms of gathering resources for your city. We have alluded to this already but it’s good to put an emphasis on it as you’ll be playing these games quite often. Make sure to take your time and survey the layout that you’re dealing with. As you advance, you’ll notice that the mini-games will become a bit trickier and more tedious. And some will tend to fool you into thinking that they’re harder than they really are.
The good thing is that you’ll have several tries to figure things out so you can afford death. However, you don’t have forever so make sure you look at things carefully. If you need to, experiment and see what happens when you pull a certain pin and such, to give you an idea of which path you need to take.
Tip #8 - Rally The Troops, Man The Torpedoes!
Ah yes, what is a great ruler without a strong, tough army to help defend the city? Well, sadly, your army starts off as a thin bunch (roughly around 15 troops) and the giant platform where soldiers line up looks lonely and empty at times. But, do not fret, ruler of lands, as you can rally some more troops. You can do so by heading over to the spot where your army is training and clicking on a flag over there in the corner. Here, you can use a small number of diamonds to go and recruit more warriors.
Yes, diamonds seem more like a premium currency in Evony but you can earn them simply by playing the game. If you would like to just add more cash to your stash then you can spend a few real-world currencies if you’d like. Otherwise, just keep on playing and you should get a comfortable amount of diamonds. It will certainly be enough to boost your army and have them ready for the battlefield. Mount up, soldiers!
Tip #9 - Eat, Drink, Recruit, Repeat
A powerful way to boost your army in Evony is by recruiting the best generals to lead your armies. Where to find them you ask? Well, you can find them typically hanging out at the tavern and drinking away, just waiting for someone to come in and say “hey, join my squad”.
You’ll need to level up other areas of your city before you start building your tavern. Once you do, you’ll be able to start recruiting away. Getting generals involved will greatly improve your army and each general has their own skills that can be applied to your group of soldiers.
Visit regularly and see who you can get to join your empire. Sit down, have a drink, and discuss. You can get even stronger generals to join you as you go. You'll be one tough army once it's all said and done.
