Evony: The King's Return review

Evony: The King's Return has a lot of different things going on. In the beginning, as civilizations begin to take shape all around the world, you'll be able to choose which country you want to rule. After that, you can start to build an empire.

There are many things that you can build including research facilities and taverns. You can also grow your army and prepare yourself for war when the time is needed. You'll gather resources to help your city thrive and prosper throughout your time with the game.

So overall, it seems like it's your common empire-building game but it does have a unique twist to it. The twist comes in when you go and grab resources. Yes, there are other ways to get them but one of the most effective ways is by completing puzzle-like mini-games.

These puzzles are a highly popular and signature aspect of Evony. You'll pull different pins in hopes that the archaeologist makes his way to the treasure safely. Sounds familiar, doesn't it? That's because it is. Yup, it's the same type of game that you've seen on all of those ads. These are legitimately fun and a good way to grab the resources you need to grow.

Evony Gameplay

As we eluded to, Evony: The King's Return is a game that's about growing your city and building your empire as you represent the country that you chose. You'll gather your share of resources to be able to build new structures, each with its own purpose.

From a research centre to a tavern and everything else in between, there are plenty of places that can be built for your city. You'll see a ton of empty spots, in fact, which you should try to fill up with new structures. As you level up through the game and gather resources, you will be able to do that.

You can also grow an army and be ready for war. You can avoid war for the most part if you want to but if you want to plant your flag in certain areas and battle it out for world domination, then you can definitely take your army out and show them what your crew is made of. Just make sure that your army is big enough and ready to go.

Significant Mini Games

In most games, mini-games are exactly what they are: mini-games. In Evony: The King's Return, it's a bit different. These pin-pulling games we talked about are almost essential for your city's growth. The things you can grab can be super useful.

The goal is to guide the archaeologist fellow by pulling some pins to open pathways to guide him. You need to avoid traps and monsters along the way. If you create the right path then he will reach the treasure chest and you'll be showered with random rewards.

It's a unique twist on how to gather your resources in an empire-building game. You can still grab things by other means but this is one of the most effective. It's also fun as the puzzle designs change each time you try to advance.

Time for Battle

So we know about the strategic side of Evony: The King's Return, but you might be asking, "Where is the fighting at?" Well, you'll have plenty of opportunities to battle if you so wish. You'll see CPU enemies hanging around outside your castle. You can fight them if you'd like and this will net you currency and other resourceful rewards. Just make sure you're at the proper level before doing so.

You can also play the role of aggressor and attack the cities of other players. You'll see many players' cities all around you. The same applies here. You can loot several items from each spot. Another thing you can do is attack the City of Throne, the biggest empire in the game. You and several players will duke it out weekly to see who will reign supreme in the city and reap the rewards.

Again, these battles are weekly so you'll be able to peek at a timer to see when it's time. All in all, being able to send your troops out to battle can be a nice change of pace if needed. If not, then you can be more passive and just try and build your city as best you can. That's the beauty of it all - you have options.

Conclusion

All in all, Evony: The King's Return feels like your classic city/empire-building game. Incorporating the mini-games does add an extra layer of uniqueness. These puzzles are as fun as they are rewarding, which is a nice way to earn the resources you need.

It can seem overwhelming at first, but once you start to see your city take shape, it looks neat and makes you feel pretty powerful. Having the weekly battles for the City of Throne is cool too, as this gives players from all over the world the chance to showcase their powerful armies.

Despite being a relatively common experience, it does throw in enough elements to make it a fun, casual game that has enough replay value to offer casual gamers and hardcore empire-building gamers alike.
