Dungeons of Hinterberg lets you hike the alps and slay monster all in one place
  • Dungeons of Hinterberg offers a mix of cosy fun and dungeon-crawling action
  • Take on 25 distinct dungeons, explore the Alps, or just chill and make friends
  • Use magic, swordplay and all manner of RPG abilities in your vacation-slash-adventure

There's a common refrain about cosy narratives regarding a witch searching for her cat in an alpine village as symptomatic of the sometimes ludicrously low stakes of games like it. And at first blush, you might be forgiven for thinking Dungeons of Hinterberg falls into just that trivialising trap. But this new release for iOS and Android, developed by Microbird Games and published by Crunchyroll, is anything but.

Dungeons of Hinterberg does have some of those stereotypically cosy elements, of course. You play as Luisa, a burnt-out lawyer on an alpine vacation in the titular visually stunning Swiss Alps. But this isn't the world as we know it, and your hiking holiday is infused with a healthy dose of monster slaying!

Need a holiday from your holiday

Dungeons of Hinterbergy promises an ambitious mix of hack 'n slash, dungeon-crawling gameplay and deep storytelling. As Luisa, you'll navigate 25 distinct dungeons across four mountaintop biomes while duking it out with all manner of magical beasties.

And the comparison to the cosy genre isn't just hyperbole either, as you'll also be able to make friends and social links, unlock perks from the friends you make and just explore the mountaintops and townships as you enjoy the views. Dungeons of Hinterberg certainly offers a surprising contrast in terms of mechanics.

It's a pretty ingenious idea, mixing more action-packed gameplay with the laid-back experience of the genre. Add to that a dynamic magic system, plenty of options for upgrades and abilities, and whether you're someone who just wants a fun adventure or fast-paced dungeon-crawling combat, you'll have something to do.
