Breakthrough lets you learn about foreign languages and cultures via a visual novel, coming soon to mobile
YugiJitsu has announced the upcoming release of Breakthrough, the studio's visual novel game that lets players learn about foreign languages and cultures at the same time. Players can expect to immerse themselves in conversations with NPCs and learn about a variety of cultural backgrounds as well, all while they attempt to complete these narratives via different vocabulary games.
In Breakthrough, players can look forward to clearing quests to score currency that they can use to unlock more stories and purchase more flashcards. There are multiple chapters to unlock, along with a fun deckbuilding mode where players can create their deck with the words that they want to know more about.
According to the developers, "Language learning takes multiple stages. What works for the beginner stage often doesn’t work as well for the intermediate stage. We position our game Breakthrough as a learning resource for the intermediate-level (A2-B2) language learners. Our game focuses on speed reading and real-life in-context vocabulary building. We see our game Breakthrough as the next level progression supplement to the existing language apps such as Duolingo, Pimsleur, Babbel, and many more."
The game is purely offline, which means that players can have fun and learn without the need for an Internet connection. There will also be a planned multiplayer function to be implemented in future patches. All these are presented in a highly stylised art style that adds to the overall charm of the game.
For now, if you're eager to know more about the project, you can join the alpha testing phase on iOS via TestFlight or on Android. The alpha build will feature English, Spanish, French, and Russian in particular. As for the timeline, the game will have a Kickstarter campaign as well this August or September.
