A whole heap of NieR Reincarnation gameplay has surfaced online after the launch of a closed beta test. One channel has now put out almost the entire first hour, giving us a more extensive look at the game's combat, perspective switching, and exploration (thanks, Gematsu).

From what I'm seeing so far, Reincarnation looks like it takes some of the series' most interesting elements and distils them into a mobile RPG experience. The primary action takes place in a vast, dilapidated city, though there are storybook sequences that play out in 2D. Some are set in the Old West, with forests, churches, and burning towns to explore. It's… interesting, to say the least.

These sequences switch between 2D and 3D perspectives; however, the transition isn't as seamless as what we've seen in NieR Automata. Instead, you'll seemingly be hit with a loading screen when jumping between a 2D storybook sequence and a 3D battle within that same space.

The combat plays out in real-time and appears to take inspiration from developer Applibot's earlier games, including BLADE XLORD. I'm liking how story-driven the first hour is. Within that short amount of time, the game regularly introduces new environments and characters.

Unfortunately for us lot in the West, NieR Reincarnation still doesn't have a confirmed global release date. Given that SINoALICE eventually made its way over here (albeit several years after its Japanese launch), I'm hopeful that we'll see Reincarnation follow suit.

In the meantime, you've got plenty of fresh gameplay footage to enjoy. Or, if that's not enough, you could always read over our interview with NieR series creator Yoko Taro from earlier this month. Check out YouTuber Point Rian's channel for more Reincarnation gameplay.
