Chillingo: 'We're going to put the gameplay back into freemium'
Square peg, round hole?
Speaking to Pocket Gamer, Joe Wee and Chris Byatte, the co-founders of highly successful British mobile publisher Chillingo, revealed that the company would be making a strong push into the freemium games sector in 2012.
"We're going to be joining the freemium party in a big way," the pair told me during a preview event of upcoming titles. They stressed that they would aim to bring "polish and quality" to the model rather than follow trends.
In terms of how they'll measure the quality, Byatte was adamant that the publisher wouldn't take the approach advocated by investors, i.e. study 'metrics' charting customer behaviour.
Instead, the company promised it would take the less scientific approach in choosing its games based on one simple question: "Is the game fun?"
