Rock Band to launch pub jam sessions, guided by the iPhone

US bars to replace real bands with virtual ones (satirical, eh?)

Rock Band to launch pub jam sessions, guided by the iPhone

Although there doesn't seem to be any known effort to bring the popular music/rhythm party game Rock Band to the iPhone, MTV Games and Harmonix Music Systems have announced that the pseudo-pop group simulator will be going public in bars across the US.

In a new slant on the karaoke scene, booze hounds will be able to get up on stage with (pretend) guitar, bass, drums and microphone and rock out - gamer style - with their favourite tracks. Rock Band Bar Nights will even feature an exclusive preview disk from the forthcoming Beatles: Rock Band before it hits the shelves.

So where does the iPhone come into this? Well, it seems the publisher will be releasing a free iPhone app to guide would-be toy musicians to these mega-karaoke bars, searchable by post code.

It's a tenuous pocket gaming link, but the idea of playing Rock Band in public - in lieu of bars paying actual musicians - is just too amusing to pass up. Kind of reminds me of that episode of South Park, when Stan and Kyle become famous Guitar Hero champions.

To those who are about to virtually rock, we salute you.

Yes. Spanner's his real name, and he's already heard that joke you just thought of. Although Spanner's not very good, he's quite fast, and that seems to be enough to keep him in a regular supply of free games and away from the depressing world of real work.
