Japan PSP sales slow down but handheld keeps chart top spot

Strong sales dominance over rival DS in home territory continues

Japan PSP sales slow down but handheld keeps chart top spot

The latest hardware sales figures from Japan for the week ending June 8th are in and show PSP is still sitting comfortably at the number one spot.

Sales are down a bit from last week: 62,016 PSP consoles were sold compared to 71,986. However, it's still outselling its two closest competitors quite easily. Wii is at number two in the chart with 44,639 sales and DS at number three with 35,020 units sold.

So while there seems to have been an exceptional amount of negativity surrounding the PSP recently in the west – with Ubisoft speaking out about the console's lack or direction (before 'retracting' the comment) and frustration over its lack of third-party support and game releases growing – the format's performance in Japan should convert into an increase in games from domestic publishers.

Perhaps some of those titles can make their way over here. We'll stop moaning then.
