Ubisoft does still strongly support PSP, 12 games coming

In a bit of a U-turn following comments by its UK managing director Rob Cooper at the end of last week, Ubisoft has come out and said it does still consider the PSP as an important platform in the current video game market.

Speaking to industry news site gi.biz, a spokesperson said: "By way of further clarifying some recent statements made in the press, Ubisoft wants to reaffirm that it strongly supports the PSP, which holds a unique place in the market, addressing dedicated gamers and offering unprecedented power in a portable console."

Cooper had previously said in an interview with the same site that the console was in "no man's land" and suggested Sony was unsure which direction it wanted to take it. He also said Ubisoft wouldn't be developing many games for it until it it was presented with a strategy publishers could get behind.

But today the publisher stated almost the complete opposite. "We support the PSP with innovative game experiences and plan to publish around 12 PSP games this fiscal year, including titles for some of our top-selling brands," confirmed the spokesperson.

Currently Ubisoft's release schedule isn't looking too heavy on PSP releases – and hasn't for a while. Notable releases such as its next Prince of Persia game, for instance, have been announced for the home consoles and DS but not PSP. We'll be keeping a close eye, though, now it sounds like the situation could be set to change.
