Angry Birds Kingdom, a new take on the classic bird-flinging series, soft launches for select regions

The latest entry into Rovio’s hit series Angry Birds, Angry Birds Kingdom, has officially soft-launched exclusively within the Philippines. This one seeks to depart from the classic Angry Birds formula and take off towards a new genre entirely, focusing on a tower-defence/survival style of game as opposed to the usual physics puzzler that Angry Birds fans are accustomed to.
Angry Birds Kingdom takes everything you know about the typical gameplay loop seen in most, if not all, of their games and throws it aside to instead swap up the genre entirely. Now, rather than launching your titular angry birds at towers of blocks to destroy pigs, you’ll actually be doing the defending instead, having to fight off hordes of enemy pigs as they swarm your screen.

In all honesty, the game actually somewhat reminds me of something like Plants Vs. Zombies, but instead of a 2D plane, you’re experiencing it from your side of the screen to the other. The similarities are certainly there, however, as you’ll place units against different lanes of enemies while they try to approach your side of the screen and demolish your protection.
I have not played the game myself yet, but I’d venture to say that there’s likely a large selection of different units you can place down that each will affect the battlefield in its own unique ways. That goes both ways, however, as the enemy waves will progressively get more difficult and spawn in unique mobs that will challenge you to perform some quick thinking and decide which of your units needs to get into which lane and when.
Overall, it’s pretty cool to see Rovio branch out with the Angry Birds IP and try something new. Unfortunately, it is currently exclusively launched for gamers within the Philippines with no word on a global release date.
