Age of Empires Mobile best civilizations to lead

Let's discuss every civilization available in the Age of Empires Mobile. What are their strengths, weaknesses and everything else you should know about them before you make your choice?
Age of Empires Mobile is a free-to-play strategy game developed by TiMi Studios and published by Level Infinite. It is a mobile adaptation of the classic franchise, which has been popular for over two decades.
If you ever played any games like Last Shelter: Survival, Last Fortress: Underground or Rise of Kingdoms, this game feels very familiar.

It features a variety of civilizations, each with its own unique units and technologies. In the next pages, you can find information about every available civilisation in the game to help you make an educated guess as to which one you should pick.
Something to keep in mind before we go on. You can, at any time, select a different civilization. So it might be a good idea to start with one that excels in the early game and switch to another one later on.
With all this out of the way, let's get into the Age of Empires Mobile best civilizations to lead!
1
British

Bonuses | |
---|---|
Archer Defense | 5% |
Player Citadel Defense | 10% |
Production of Mills | 5% |
British is a civilization that I wouldn't recommend for the earlier stages of the game. The archer defence bonus sure is nice if you are going to make an archer army, but the bonus to player citadel defence is one of these things that sounds good in theory, but in reality, it's not due to the game mechanics.
I mean, think about it. If someone who's 20 levels above you decides to attack you, you are dead in the water anyway and that 10% won't do much. The only scenario where this bonus is actually good is when someone of equal level is attacking you while you are online.
2
Byzantines

Bonuses | |
---|---|
Swordmen's Defense | 5% |
All Units Types' Siege Damage | 5% |
Stone Gathering Speed | 5% |
Overall I'd say the Byzantines are pretty mid and the reason is that in reality, they only offer one good bonus which is the Swordmen's Defense boost by 5%. If you are going to make a swordmen's army (like most people), the defence bonus will come in handy for sure.
Now as for the other two bonuses, "Stone Gathering Speed" is whatever and the "All Units Types' Siege Damage" is somewhat pointless as it only benefits the damage done to structures after all the troops have been eliminated. I mean, at this point, the battle has already been decided and if you are going to take down a structure a little bit faster makes no real difference. At least not at all in the early stages of the game.
3
Chinese

Bonuses | |
---|---|
Archers' Defense | 5% |
Villager Capacity | +8 |
Walls Durability | 10% |
The only S-Tier civilization in my opinion as it offers by far the best bonus to help you establish and grow your kingdom in the early stages of the game. And specifically, I'm talking about the "Villager Capacity".
If you are totally new to the genre, you might be wondering what's the deal with the villagers and why they are so important. Well, they are important because you can assign them to various tasks such as gathering wood, stone, gold, etc. and get plenty of resources that you desperately need.
Because of this, you will be able to build a very strong economy and you won't have to sweat about resources too much.
4
Egyptians

Bonuses | |
---|---|
Pikemen's Defense | 5% |
Troop Load | 5% |
Gathering Troop Unit Loss Preservation | 5% |
In theory the Egyptians excel in resource gathering with bonuses to Pikeman defense, Troop load, and Gathering troop unit loss prevention. This combination allows for efficient farming and safe resource transportation.
Problem is, in reality, it doesn't work like that as most kingdoms don't even farm gather nodes and so the only good bonus is the Pikemen's defence boost.
Maybe if you are a part of an alliance in the later stages of the game that actually has a plan to farm nodes and whatnot, maybe then the Egyptians can fulfil that role. But until that happens, I wouldn't recommend them to you.
5
French

Bonuses | |
---|---|
Cavalry's Defense | 5% |
Resource Exchange Rate | 5% |
Gathering Troop's Defense | 5% |
So let's talk about the French civilization and what it offers. The cavalry's defence bonus is nice, if you are going to build cavalry that is of course. The thing is, most f2p don't. So there's that. Are you going to spend money on the game or not?
But let's move to the other buff the French civilizations get, which is the "Gathering Troop's Defense". If you read what I wrote about the Egyptians, it's pretty much the same thing here. Yes, the buff isn't bad at all, but, most kingdoms never hit nodes so...
Last we have the "Resource Exchange Rate" buff which sounds good right? You get better rates when you exchange your goods for something else. Let's say you trade stones for gold or whatever. French do get better rates which in the long run, it adds up.
Now here's the thing. You won't use the market that much for this bonus to matter. So overall, the French civilization I'd say is pretty mid for new players who don't want to invest money in building a cavalry.
6
Japanese

Bonuses | |
---|---|
Swordmen's Defense | 5% |
Attack Bonus Against Player Citadels | 5% |
Attack Against Tribes in the World | 5% |
The Japanese is an aggressive civilization with bonuses to swordsman defence, attack against player citadels, and attack against tribes. All of these bonuses are good, especially for new players who want to stay f2p.
As you probably noticed, they don't have any resources-related bonuses. Instead, what they rely upon is the "Attack Against Tribes in the World". The buff is nice as it comes in handy during events as well.
If you decide to go with the Japanese, focus on producing low-cost units early on, fight a lot around the world and build a strong economy that way. Overall, I'd say this is an A-tier civilization for newcomers.
7
Koreans

Bonuses | |
---|---|
Cavarly's Defense | 5% |
Looting Limit | 5% |
Resource Storage Protection Rate | 10% |
The idea behind the Koreans is that this is a civilization that excels in looting and hoarding resources. If your plan is to be a big spender who will go around attacking and looting other players then I guess this might fit your playstyle.
But even so, at least in the early stages of the game I don't think Koreans are the way to go as they don't offer any good bonuses really. The Looting Limit buff is nice but not that big, and the Resource Storage Protection Rate is kind of pointless since early on you want to invest your resources and not hoard them.
8
Romans

Bonuses | |
---|---|
Pikermen's Defense | 5% |
Healing Speed | 5% |
Villagers Boost to Building's Production | 10% |
I think the Roman civilization can potentially be S-Tier in the later stages of the game thanks mainly to Villagers Boost to Building's Production bonus, but I will explain that in a little bit. Before that let me say that the Pikemen bonus is pretty good since many players choose to go with that type of army.
On the other hand, the healing speed is not as good as it sounds because of a game mechanic that allows you to ask for alliance support if you heal smaller batches of your troops.
But, back to the Villagers Boost to Building's Production buff and why I think this buff can push Romans to be an S-Tier civilization during the later stages. If you don't know, you can assign your villagers to various tasks such as gathering gold, stone, etc. This buff gives you hourly bonuses per villagers which means that once you have many villagers, this can be huge.
These are the best civilizations in AoE Mobile at the moment. If you have anything to add, leave a comment below!
