Artificial genius or virtual insanity?

  • Warcodes is a creature collector that uses AI generation
  • It allows you to scan the barcodes of products and generate monsters
  • Their latest update, Warcodia, adds an open world to explore and PvE battles

The push towards artificial intelligence (such as it is) has been fraught with some rather questionable design choices. But it's also at the very least allowed some developers to really push the boat out, as Cozy Orchards has done with their virtual creature collector, Warcodes.

Having recently had a major overhaul with its Warcodia update, it might be that now is the time to jump in and give Warcodes a shot. In this creature battler, you'll build your own team of different monsters, while now being able to explore the open world of Warcodia and take on timed PvE battles in the Cursed Forest and Wraith Woods.

Where Warcodes' key selling point comes in is precisely where the name comes from. In Warcodes, you generate new creatures by scanning barcodes, not exactly unusual, of course, except for the fact that you can do this seemingly with anything from a book to a chocolate bar. This, the developer boasts, means you can generate one-of-a-kind creatures.

When everyone is super...

Warcodia certainly has an interesting selling point, and one which it could be argued the AI generation would be very well-suited for. But at a glance, it doesn't look as if it does much to stand out aside from that, and some might argue a more conventional procedural generation system might've produced, if not entirely distinct, then at least more traditional-looking creatures.

As it stands, if you can look past the use of the tech, it might be that you find something to enjoy in Warcodia, especially with its newest update.

Creature collectors are certainly fun, no matter how they work! And if you want to find out what other options there are once Warcodes has whetted your appetite, why not check out our list of the top 10 iOS and Android games like Pokémon Go?
