VH1 goes retro with free download of Intellivision for US App Store

Put me in an old dress, knock my teeth out, and call me Mable but I still won't be your grandma.

Similarly, I'm no retro gamer.

And the way MTV-owned soft rock channel VH1 has launched its Intellivision emulator for iPhone ain't likely to encourage me none either.

Released by Mattel back in 1979, the Intellivision was one of the Atari VCS-era of consoles, which was more popular in the US than Europe.

Pay now or later?

Which may account for the way VH1 has released its iPhone app for free in the US, while it's only available in the UK (and Europe) in the form of the €2.39 or £1.79 iPad version.

Which I downloaded by mistake.

The difference is that the iPad version (also available in the US for $2.99), contains six free games, whereas the free US iPhone version only gives you Astrosmash for naught.

Those other classics - Skiing, Chip Shot Golf, Thin Ice, Thunder Castle and Night Stalker - have to be paid for as in-app purchases at 99c a pop in the iPhone release.

At least they all come in original and updated versions, with Bluetooth and wi-fi multiplayer modes.

Alternatively, I'd recommend Kiloo and Manomio's Commodore 64, which is currently available on a free promotion thanks to FreeAppADay.com.
