True Fear 3 review - "A delightfully eerie adventure"
  • Eerie atmosphere
  • Challenging puzzles to solve
  • A darkly compelling narrative

The conclusion to developer Digital Lounge's point-and-click horror series, True Fear, is coming soon. True Fear Forsaken Souls 3 picks up after the events of part two, with the main character, Holly Stonehouse, awakening in her home to a foreboding knock at the front door. You’ll explore varying haunting environments, each featuring an eerie sense of unease.

True Fear 3 Continues Holly's Journey

The third installment in this horror puzzle trilogy follows Holly as she continues to investigate Charles Laudius’ cult and her connection to it, along with that of her two sisters. With no leads left to follow up at the abandoned asylum, you’ll begin this leg of the adventure by exploring the triplets' old school.

The eerie, rundown academic atmosphere will send a chill down your spine as you uncover more clues. You'll collect notes and letters in your journal as you explore, which offer you an in-depth understanding of individuals caught up in the conspiracy, such as cult leader Charles Laudius, his minions, and the former head custodian of the school.

The struggle many point-and-click adventures face is balancing challenging puzzles with a story that compels the player forward. Too often, the balance isn’t met. However, True Fear 3 manages to offer an intriguing plot while also providing tons of challenging puzzles to solve.

True Fear 3 Immerses You with Creepy Cutscenes

The cutscenes you’ll encounter throughout your adventure add to the macabre vibe and keep you engaged in the narrative. While the cutscene graphics aren’t anything to write home about, they are pretty decent for a mobile point-and-click adventure. Besides, there’s just something inherently spooky about 90s-style low-poly 3D graphics.

Predominantly, you'll be clicking around the screen, collecting objects, and figuring out how to use them. While this sounds simple, you’ll be kept on your toes by diverse challenges that oft require you to think creatively.

True Fear 3 manages to keep things fresh with creative locations to discover and even flashbacks to play, however. During a flashback, the room and the items in it will look more colourful. You’ll also have to complete a flashback in it entirely at once rather than the way you can jump between puzzles most of the time. Not only do the flashbacks add a layer of intrigue, but they also bring the backstory to life.

True Fear 3 Lets You Choose Your Challenge Level

Throughout your adventure, you'll come across challenging puzzles that require you to think outside the box. From rotating blocks to form a path for a power source to organizing chains so that none intersect, there's no shortage of head-scratchers here.

Luckily, Digital Longue allows you to complete any of these puzzles in one of three modes: casual, advanced or expert. You can change the difficulty level each time you enter one of these challenges, so you’re not stuck with one mode throughout. Casual mode is great if you’re having trouble, while expert mode really ramps up the difficulty.

True Fear Forsaken Souls 3 is a satisfying conclusion to a captivating horror series. The dark and creepy atmosphere will keep you on edge as you figure out your way forward. Further, the ability to change the difficulty setting of the more in-depth puzzles is a real breath of fresh air. With a compelling narrative, eerier cutscenes and creative and engaging puzzles to solve, True Fear 3 is an epic little point-and-click adventure that’s bound to draw you in.
