If the success of titles like Trainz Simulator on tablets and Train Simulator on PC is anything to go by, there's actually a rather large section of the games-playing public that love the idea of rocketing along the countryside in everyone's favourite (overpriced) form of public transport.

Now, iPhone owners can get in on the 'action', too, thanks to Trainz Driver - a more casual take on what is usually quite an anal genre.

All aboard

So, there's the option of either running in Easy Mode or Realistic Mode - the complexity of the controls that you'll have to master is the main distinguishing feature. There are also "arcade style sessions" on board, as well as genuine routes to master.

From the trailer, it looks like you'll only be able to drive diesel trains, so those hoping for some old skool steam action will be disappointed.

Still, there is the option of creating and sharing your own routes via the iPad or Android tablet version of Trainz, and then playing them on your phone, which is rather nifty.

Trainz Driver is out now for both iPhone [download] and Android [download], priced at £1.99 / $2.99.
