The Battle of Polytopia introduces one-shot weekly challenges
  • The Battle of Polytopia has introduced new one-try-and-done weekly challenges
  • Compete to achieve the highest score on the leaderboard
  • But be warned, there's no do-overs once you've played

When it comes to 4X strategy on mobile one of the arguable genre definers is the hit Civ-like The Battle of Polytopia. This stylised but nonetheless, deep and strategic take on the format has garnered many fans, and now it's set to introduce a whole new way for you to show off your prowess with new weekly challenges!

The core conceit of these weekly challenges is simple. Worldwide every single player has one shot at completing the challenge with the same seed; that means the same tribe, same map, enemies and resources. It's the ultimate test of skill as you only have one attempt per day, with no chance to retry if you make a mistake, you either have to own it and claw your way back or accept the defeat.

It's not the first time we've seen this done by far, IO Interactive's Hitman famously had the Elusive Target which were NPCs that had to be assassinated in a single try and disappeared (almost permanently) if you failed or their limited-time availability was up. But I think that Polytopia will benefit immensely from the inclusion of this mechanic.

Indeed, Polytopia's spiritual inspiration Civilization has done monthly challenges for a while now, but the roguelike one-chance-to-succeed nature of these new weekly challenges adds that crucial element of appeal for the hardcore players out there.

The only sticking point for me might be the lack of specific win conditions. It's simply garner the highest number of points and then you win. Hopefully, in future, we'll see some scenarios and challenges that offer more distinct and unusual win conditions.
