Silent Scope has the iPhone in its sights

Konami continues to plunder its awesome back catalogue of arcade hits as it brings Silent Scope to the iPhone.

The 1999 coin-op was a big hit, thanks to the superb sniper rifle controller, complete with pseudo-telescopic viewfinder. It saw one or two home console conversions (and a mobile version a year or two back, that didn't fair too well, unfortunately), though none really panned out all that well because of the lack of a pretend sniper’s rifle, of course.

But after lessons gleamed from Metal Gear Solid Touch and having seen the relative popularity of iPhone apps such as iSniper, Silent Scope makes perfect sense for Konami’s next Apple-based game.

“With the release of Silent Scope on the iPhone and iPod touch, we're substantiating our commitment to developing quality content that takes our top franchise titles and turns them into an on-the-go gaming experience,” says Konami Mobile and Online veep Anthony Borquez. "Silent Scope allows players to conceal their firearms and perfect their sharpshooting skills wherever they go.”

The game follows the same premise of a terrorist kidnapping of the Pres and his kinfolk, and it’s up to you as a stealthy sharp shooter to take out the trash (from 500 yards away).

Considering the motion sensitive controls and accurate touchscreen, we actually have quite high hopes for Silent Scope on iPhone. So stake yourself out a good hiding spot on the grassy knoll.

Yes. Spanner's his real name, and he's already heard that joke you just thought of. Although Spanner's not very good, he's quite fast, and that seems to be enough to keep him in a regular supply of free games and away from the depressing world of real work.
