Samurai Shodown, the classic brutal 2D brawler, makes its way to iOS and Android

Fresh off of releasing the legendary Fatal Fury out into the wild, SNK and Hamster are coming in hot with another 2D classic. Samurai Shodown has released on mobile for the first time courtesy of the ACA NeoGeo archive collection. Samurai Shodown is up there with the old Street Fighter titles as one of the mainstays in the fighting game community, so any old head from the arcade days is bound to be jumping with joy at this news.

Samurai Shodown is one of the most unique and different fighting game series to this day, with even the modern iteration bucking current trends. Where most 2D fighters will involve lots of combos, juggling your opponent for 8-20 hits or something similar, Samurai Shodown is instead known for the fact that you can basically take one, maybe two hits per round before death. Given that the series tries to emulate brutal sword combat, this style of gameplay makes a lot of sense for the setting.

With all of this in mind, the fact that a game from the early ’90s has been modernized and is now playable on your phone is as wild as it always is, especially given this release features full controller support and the ability to invite your friends to lobbies. Given all of this, it’s safe to say this might be the most definitive release of the old 2D brawler available. If you haven’t got your hands on this classic so far, there’s no better time to get your feet wet and see what people mean when they talk about the good old days of fighting games.

If you’re looking to give Samurai Shodown a try, you can download it for only $3.99 on both the App Store and Google Play, and trust me when I say that if you’re a fan of the genre, it is worth every single penny. There’s not a 2D fighter like Samurai Shodown out there, so whip out your phone and get to slicing!
