Revolutionary Concepts has taken 1985’s anime-styled arcade cabinet Road Blaster and squeezed it into a tiny iPhone App.

The game puts you behind the wheel of a gnarly post-apocalyptic car as a lone vigilante out for revenge in the ravaged wasteland. You’ll be cleaning the streets of thugs, mowing down sunbathers on the beach, and escaping evil combine harvesters.

You can drive about with a virtual steering wheel, or go for tilt controls to manoeuvre your motor with the accelerometer. You can also play on Easy, Medium, or Expert setting, and gun for driving ratings, Game Center achievements, and leaderboards.

The game is mostly a faithful port of the ancient arcade cab, but features numerous brand new features. The visuals have been updated, especially for the fourth-generation Retina display, and there’s a new soundtrack alongside a host of new sound effects.

“We've spent an inordinate amount of time making this hardcore coin-gobbler as accessible as possible for todays casual iOS gamer,” says Revolutionary Concepts’s Wayne Whatford, “and dare to say it is as close to an 'off-rails' realtime laserdisc game as there has ever been.“

Road Blaster will hit all iPhone and iPod touch models from midnight, with a celebratory price of 59p / 99c / €0.79c. Next week, the game will leap to its usual price of £1.79 / $2.99 / €2.39.
