AppGuru’s newest release sees a new spin put onto the chess genre, this time with adorable little kitties instead of chess pieces! PurrChess is meant to make the daunting idea of getting into chess a bit more accessible, while also allowing full decoration of both board and pieces with cute decorations and cosmetics.

PurrChess puts a big emphasis on customisation. It sports a ton of chess board options, each crafted to be aesthetically pleasing and completely up to the player. This allows a ton of variety in every match on the visual end, and also allows each player to express themselves in whatever way they see fit, adding a bit more flair to the typical chess game.

On top of the boards, your pieces can also be custom fitted to represent your favourite looks. While every piece is cat-themed one way or another, there’s a ton of different skins to rock too. For example, the hot property item right now is a samurai skin, which adorns your kitties in a kabuto along with some samurai armour to bring honour to their battlefield.

Beyond the cosmetics, PurrChess is a pure and unadulterated chess experience, which might be shocking given the popular auto-chess genre as of late. So, if you’re familiar with the true, real version of the game, there are no strange twists or gamey gimmicks here. It's just you, your pieces, and your logic, squared off against an opponent who is on the same playing field as you.

Speaking of opponents, PurrChess also of course allows you to square up in multiplayer with random opponents, or alternatively, with your own friends. Add in the fact that there are some really nice tutorials and practice options for every player, and this is one of the most accessible ways to get into the complex game that is chess I’ve seen to date.

If you’d like to give it a try yourself, you can find PurrChess available to download exclusively on the Play Store for now. There’s no word on an iOS port just yet, but one could be on the way. Stay tuned to the official website in the meantime for any updates on that or just to check out screenshots and all of the features!
