Phobies guide: our four favourite horror-inspired Phobies to add to your line-up this Halloween

| Phobies

With good ol' All Hallows’ Eve just around the corner, the terrifying (yet kinda adorable) Phobies are more eager than ever to showcase their moves in the arena, and lure players into their web of strategic manipulation - okay, maybe not quite that dramatic; but who doesn’t love a good Phobies match?

In the spirit of the season, we’ve listed below a selection of Phobies that draw inspiration from some popular ghosts, beasts, and aliens from horror and sci-fi, so that both experienced and new players alike can discover something new about these spooky Phobies and maybe even discover a new favourite to add to their go-to battle lineup.

Grimes

Grimes is the one we all know and recognise as the Grim Reaper. Much like the name suggests, Grimes here is a unit that gets increasingly more “Grim Reaper-y” with each kill. With single target attacks and pretty high base damage, Grimes is a unit that should be feared if left unchecked for the duration of the game.

  • Key cost: 4
  • Rarity: UR
  • Type: Dimensional
  • Skill: Each time it directly kills an enemy, its damage increases.

Since Grimes doesn’t have a very big movement range, positioning is key. With fairly low-to-mid HP and attacks that get scarier with each kill, the best way to use Grimes would be to finish off enemies whose health has been depleted up to a point, since that way his attacks will increase with each kill.

The best strategy would be to deploy Phobies that can deal massive damage and keep enemies at bay (to an extent), then follow up with Grimes to finish them off. Once the skill’s damage has been stacked up enough, it’s time to finish off the Heart.

Alastor

If looks could kill, Alastor would be public enemy number one. Taking inspiration from the one character that instilled fear (if not terror) in many, Sadako Yamamura (also known as "the girl from The Ring"), this character is actually a rather beloved and great unit in Phobies.

  • Key cost: 6
  • Rarity: UR
  • Type: Dimensional
  • Skill: Transfers the same amount of damage to opponents back to itself as health

With a lot of Lifesteal readily built into its kit, Alastor is a Flying unit that can inflict quite a bit of damage, while also healing back the same amount. It's a great Phobie for situations where you will have to take some damage knowingly, such as blocking a path or forcing an enemy to attack one of your units if it meant enabling other, stronger ones.

Alastor is a great unit for conquering Panic Points, since it can just camp there and even if damage occurs, it can just automatically heal everything back up with a few attacks.

Werewolf

With the Hunter Moon among us, we thought it particularly apt to include Werewolf in our list; a Phobie that’s no stranger to the powers the moon can possess. The iconic beast has seen many interpretations throughout European folklore dating back to the days of ancient Rome, but none of those have quite possessed the ability to generate destruction as this Phobie.

  • Key cost: 4
  • Rarity: Ultra-Rare
  • Type: Monster
  • Skill: Transforms into a powerful beast with 3 times the health and 2 times the attack damage of its original state.

When in its original pale moon wolf form this unit can navigate the map with ease due to its movement range of 3; and for only the cost of 4 keys which makes it a perfect choice for anyone who is player 2 to enjoy some early game counterplay and panic point capturing.

Werewolf is a great change-of-pace unit as the transformation allows for it to bully its way through your opponent’s front line and deliver significant damage to enemy Phobies.

Just remember that the change is not permanent, Werewolf will continue to change between its forms every 3rd turn.

BoMangles

Whilst most horror monsters are outwardly scary in appearance, there’s something especially disturbing about those that can hide their evil nature from us. Usually depicted as the embodiment of fun and merriment, clowns are one of those special cases where a sinister interpretation completely flips our expectations and scares us silly.

From Pennywise to Violator, clowns have featured prominently throughout horror movies and literature, and can be found in Phobies also with the demonic looking BoMangles.

  • Key cost: 3
  • Rarity: Common
  • Type: Mechanical
  • Skill: Cannot be poisoned or diseased

BoMangles’ high health and attack damage puts it in the top 15% of the 3-key cost units.

The maniacal clown also happens to be one of the most versatile of those units and offers multiple strategic options. Its high health and ability to not be poisoned or diseased also makes it a perfect forward unit to your attack.

Placing the sinister clown so that the Panic Point is just in range is a strong deterrent for many low key costing units as BoMangle’s firepower can destroy many of them.
