Sega has announced the next Mega Drive classic to be ported over to iPhone, following fan favourites like Sonic the Hedgehog 2, Ecco the Dolphin and Shining Force.

The latest is 1989 science-fantasy RPG Phantasy Star II, from back when it was an actual role-playing game and not the crazy anime-inspired casual MMO crapola it is today.

The game uses the classic virtual D-pad and buttons combo, like every other Mega Drive emulation attempt. But with the slow, considered pace of an RPG, there shouldn’t be too many gripes with a touchscreen control scheme.

Phantasy Star II will save your game as soon as you quit the app, making it perfect for short tube-ride battles as well as epic hour-long adventures.

It'll be released on iPhone and iPod touch this Thursday.
