So... $598, then?

Yoshida on ‘proper value’ NGP: ‘It’s not going to be $599’

If there’s one question still lingering after Sony’s NGP press conference, it’s pricing. How much will a quad-core, five-inch handheld run you come the console’s release in late 2011/early 2012?

It’s a concern shared by SCE Worldwide Studios chief Shuhei Yoshida, who told Game Informer that “from the very beginning of the project - since 2008 - pricing was one of the considerations that we had.”

“Hopefully when we announce the price, people will see the proper value."

Sony’s not had much luck with pricing lately. The technology leviathan shocked anxious PlayStation 3 owners at E3 2006 with its monster “599 US Dollars” bombshell. The year before, then-SCE CEO Ken Kutaragi told gamers to expect to “work more hours” to afford the next gen console.

But Yoshida says we won’t see a re-run of that shocking E3 reveal. "It's not going to be $599," he assured Game Informer.

Which is a relief - US retailer GameStop briefly put the console up for pre-order at a jaw-dropping $1000.
