Sony unveils Skinny tool for non-game PlayStation apps

Sony has been showing developers a new piece of software at its GDC booth in San Francisco this week.

Named Skinny, the lightweight tool allows developers to quickly get applications up on the PlayStation Network with no software development. Sony even claims that content creators can create a fully functioning app in one day.

The web-based editor uses XML to present images, audio, video, and text on PS3 and PSP, and is intended for applications such as strategy guides, cheats, manuals, eBooks, comics, and episodic video.

Skinny's authoring tool allows you to publish the application to either a UMD or a PlayStation Network image file. It will then be submitted to Sony for approval, like all game content, before appearing on the PlayStation Network.
