Sony opens up PlayStation Store for window shopping

Looky, no touchy option in firmware 5.50

Sometimes I really have no idea what press releases are about.

Take, for example, Sony's missive that the forthcoming PSP system software update (v5.50, due 21st April) means you no longer need a PlayStation Network account to do a quick bit of window shopping using your PSP in the PlayStation Store.

What does this mean?

Who would want to see what's available to download if they can't log in and actually download it?

The second element of the press release is slightly more sensible.

PSP users will be able to view PlayStation Network's Information Board, which is a live news feed detailing the latest PlayStation Store offers, via the XrossMediaBar.

This RSS feed-type approach means that you can immediately see if there's anything new in the store without logging in. Obviously it's not very useful if you don't have an account.

The most hopeful take on the story then is that this marks the first steps in opening up the PlayStation Store to a true web interface. Maybe...

Still, at least Sony is doing something to highlight the PSP content it's been making available on the Store for months. All it needs to do to ensure the pricing of downloadable PSP games is less than that of retail games and it might start to see some action.
