The PSP has now sold over 10 million units in Japan during the period between December 12th, 2004 and August 24th, 2008, according to Japanese gaming magazine Famitsu.

Software sales figures for the top five selling games on the console were also revealed, bearing not too many surprises with both Monster Hunter games topping the list having sold over 4 million copies combined. The original Monster Hunter Portable also sits in fourth position.

Here's the full run-down of PSP's best-sellers in Japan:

1. Monster Hunter Portable 2nd G (Capcom) - 2,396,642
2. Monster Hunter Portable 2nd (Capcom) - 1,706,387
3. Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII (Square Enix) - 790,705
4. Monster Hunter Portable (Capcom) - 668,964
5. Phantasy Star Portable (SEGA) - 545,242

It's good news on the hardware sales figures, but you could say disappointing Sony hasn't managed to release anything to make it into its own top five. Perhaps Resistance: Retribution will address that situation in other territories, but probably not in RPG-centric Japan.
