PSP is 'incredibly successful', says Rebellion CTO Chris Kingsley
System is 'kicking the arse of pretty much every other system out there'
Everyone has an opinion on PSP; how it's doing and what it should be doing to become an even greater success. Lately most of those opinions seem to have been a bit on the negative side, though, so comments made by Rebellion CTO Chris Kingsley in an interview with gi.biz recently come as a bit of a welcome change.
According to Kingsley, whose studio developed Free Running and Star Wars Battlefront: Renegade Squadron for PSP (amongst others), PSP is a great little handheld with a good few years left in it thanks to its versatility.
He commented that the console is "kicking the arse of pretty much every other system out there " in Japan, because the right games have come out. With a bit of luck he thinks some of those games could be released in Europe and be just as successful.
"They've done a great job," he said of Sony. "There are tens of millions of PSPs out there worldwide."
He also reckons the reason PSP doesn't appear more successful has to do with the competition. "It's funny… I guess the PSP has also been a bit in the shadow of the DS, but the PSP is incredibly successful… but I guess that the DS has been a super-amazing platform."
He noted that his company has probably done more games for the platform than others, saying: "It wasn't a deliberate choice, it just happened. We were very keen on it as a platform and it took off for us."
He does however concede that not as many publishers are supporting the PSP to the extent they once did though, and puts it down to them wanting to work on flashy, high-end stuff.
