  • Port Quest is a new initiative from the IGDA, IGDAF and WIGI
  • It offers a suite of new support for devs bringing their releases to mobile
  • Could this be the start of a renaissance in mobile ports?

I think it's safe to say that, as each year passes, the technological gap between mobile and PC & console slowly narrows. The kind of shooters, RPGs and strategy releases on mobile nowadays would've been unimaginable just five years ago. But it's still apparently not enough, as a new initiative has been launched to encourage more, with Port Quest!

The focus with Port Quest, a new initiative from the IGDA (International Game Developers Association). WIGI (Women In Games Initiative) and IGDAF are, as you might expect, to bring more ports to mobile. Port quest aims to help development teams through the process by offering expert advice from industry veterans, as well as workshops, marketing campaigns and other aid.

Not only that, but selected applicants can also rely on being featured in a dedicated showcase. Something for those of you who want to check out upcoming ports on mobile, will definitely be looking forward to.

Thinking with Ports

Applications are open through September 15th, with those attending the Devcom conference also having access to an exclusive panel. It may be flying over your head a bit if you're a player, but if you have even an inkling of the struggle to launch something for mobile, this is excellent news.

The fact is that mobile has often suffered from being relegated to a 'lesser' gaming platform. Despite the massive reach that dwarfs virtually every other platform, it's still derided through no inherent fault of its own. And this initiative promises to blow the doors wide open for all manner of new releases to make their way to mobile. The sky, it seems, is very much the limit.

Speaking of top releases, if you want to keep up with them, then we're your place to be. Check out our list of the top five new mobile games to try this week for some of our picks from the last seven days of launches!
