Overwatch Mobile could still be coming as Nexon pen new deal with Blizzard

  • Overwatch Mobile could still be on the way as Nexon pens a new deal with Blizzard
  • The main crux is for publishing and development rights for Starcraft
  • But a potential MOBA spinoff/sequel to Overwatch is also being reported

Overwatch on mobile has seemed like a pipe dream for a while now, especially after Jason Schreier's recent tell-all book about Blizzard revealed a potential mobile version had been long since put on ice. But a new deal penned by Korean developer Nexon and Blizzard could change that.

The main crux of the deal, however, focuses on the publishing and development rights for a new release in the iconic StarCraft RTS franchise. Competition had been fierce with other names such as Krafton and Netmarble reportedly expressing interest. However, if this is confirmed, it means that Nexon would now be helming further entries in the series.

But it's reports that the bidding also included publishing rights for Overwatch mobile that are most surprising and intriguing. Since it seemingly confirms that the mobile port is not dead, and even suggests that this would be an official sequel, taking the form of a MOBA.

This wouldn't be the first time that Overwatch has seen representation in the MOBA genre, as you might remember Heroes of the Storm once being pushed heavily by Blizzard. Certainly, it's a distinct possibility that Heroes of the Storm could come to mobile, and this may be what the proposed Overwatch MOBA actually is.

However, it's equally likely we could get a spin-off release. But I also think we can put the idea that this will be an 'Overwatch 3' firmly in the 'not happening' category, since it would be a major change for the previously console and PC-focused franchise.

At the same time, embracing its clear MOBA inspiration may be beneficial for Overwatch. And with new rivals such as, well, Marvel Rivals threatening to overshadow it, then it might be time for Blizzard and their publishing partners to take drastic action to push this once rising franchise.
