Nintendo president Satoru Iwata has apologised to investors and the public for the dramatic losses the company announced yesterday.

In its latest financial report Nintendo posted losses for $923 million for the first half of 2011. Iwata said it was all down to the 3DS price-cut, but he is confident the future is now bright for the handheld console.

He also said the company is looking to create "new genres" of games to attract more customers and entertain current ones, pointing to the likes of Brain Training and Wii Fit as examples of genres that Nintendo has thrown into the limelight in recent years.

"We would like the Nintendo 3DS to become explosively widespread and sweep away some reports that game-dedicated devices are coming to an end," he said.

Those "new genres" definitely won't be coming this Christmas, given that the likes of Super Mario 3D Land and Mario Kart 7 are on the way, but it sounds like 2012 will be an exciting time to be a 3DS owner.
